We make one of these, so read this with that in mind. What follows is an honest account of what each option is actually good at — including the cases where ours is the wrong choice.

First: voting is not the same as a shared queue

This trips people up constantly. A shared queue — Spotify Jam, Apple Music SharePlay — hands everyone direct control of the same list. Anyone can add a song or drag it to the top. Voting is different: guests vote, and the songs the room wants most rise on their own.

Shared queues are better with three friends who trust each other. Voting is better once the room is bigger than the number of people you would hand your phone to.

Festify — the best free Spotify option

A free, open-source web app. The host connects Spotify Premium, guests open a link in any browser and vote on the next song. Nothing to install for anyone.

Pick it if: your music is in Spotify. It is the most direct answer for a Spotify household, it costs nothing, and it works from any device with a browser including Android and a laptop.

Limits: it needs Spotify Premium on the host, there is no native app, and no big-screen mode.

Spotify Jam — best for a small group who already use Spotify

Built into Spotify. The host starts a Jam and friends join the same session, adding and reordering tracks directly.

Pick it if: everyone at the party already has Spotify and you want zero setup. It is one tap inside an app people already have.

Limits: every participant needs a Spotify account, and there is no voting — one enthusiastic guest can reorder the whole night. It scales badly past a handful of people.

Apple Music SharePlay — the Apple equivalent

Apple's shared listening, over FaceTime or with people nearby. Everyone controls one queue.

Pick it if: you and your guests all subscribe to Apple Music and you want a shared queue with nothing extra installed.

Limits: every participant needs their own Apple Music subscription, which is the wall most parties hit. No voting, and no way in for someone on Android.

TouchTunes — for bars, not living rooms

Worth naming because people search for it, but it solves a different problem. TouchTunes controls the physical jukeboxes installed in bars and restaurants — you pay per song with credits. It is not something you can run at home.

Pick it if: you are in a bar that has one.

Jukebox — Apple Music, real voting, and the TV

Ours. The host picks an Apple Music playlist or their whole library; guests join by code, QR or link and vote from any phone with nothing installed. The most-voted song plays next, and the room can vote to skip.

Pick it if: you host on Apple Music and want the room to decide without everyone needing a subscription. It is currently the only app in this category with an Apple TV app — the queue, live vote counts, synced lyrics and a join QR on the big screen, while the music keeps playing from the host's phone so your speaker setup is untouched.

Limits, honestly: the host must be on iPhone with Apple Music. It will not play your Spotify library. If you are a Spotify household, use Festify instead — we would rather tell you that than waste your evening.
